Personality:
quirky
"I'm often told that I'm... abnormal. What exactly is 'normal', though? Ha! You see, I'm challenging your way of thinking now, aren't I? Heh, but seriously. I've been told that I'm really quirky. I think that's a compliment? I guess some 'quirky' things about me would be how I'm always carrying around this camera. Or that I'm really random. Am I random? I don't think I'm that random! I mean, I suppose I talk about random things. Like... bugs. I love insects. I don't know why, but they're really really fascinating to me! I like to sit and watch bees as they buzz around their hives, or watch ants march back and forth carrying food to their nests. Is that weird?"
fun-loving
"I love to have fun! Erm, with restrictions of course, heh! I'm into that whole 'party scene crowd... thing'. Whatever it's called. I don't do drugs or drink anything. And I've tried! Back in college. But it wasn't my thing, y'know? But that doesn't mean I can't have fun! I like to take others on adventures! And explore! And just, you know... laugh! I like to think I have a nice little 'gift' for making others smile and laugh. I don't know if they're laughing at me or with me, but either way is fine. Laughing is contagious, y'know! And I know I definitely laugh whenever others are laughing! And yeah, that's how I have fun!"
adventurous
"I've been told I'm like a dog because of my enthusiasm to get out and try things. I guess that's true! If you say the word 'adventure' with me around, expect me on your doorstep with a hiking backpack and a camera! It doesn't matter where we go, either! I love to explore new things, visit different places. I like to see the beauty of the world through my wonderful lenses. This is why I really got into photography. The world around us is so beautiful! I take pictures of anything I can! Oh, wait, I'm getting off track... Ah, adventures. Yes. I love to have them, and I tend to invite others on adventures with me. If there's really nothing to do, I'll make something up! I have a childish imagination, I think. Which is great! Children are awesome!"
thoughtful
"I wouldn't call myself self-sacrificing, but I do definitely strive to make sure others are happy and well-balanced. I tend to put others before myself. But that's not bad, right? No. I don't think it's bad. I always make sure my companions are comfortable no matter what we're doing. If someone is upset, I try to cheer them up. And I keep trying until I can get at least a little smile. And I keep trying after that! I'm like a mother hen sometimes, always making sure my friends are happy and unharmed."
embraces change
"I might seem wild at first, but honestly, I really like to just go with the flow of things. When things change or shit happens, I don't let it get to me. Why bother, right? With change, comes... Well... change! And change isn't a bad thing! Change is a very, very good thing. Sometimes it's hard, sure, but it's even harder sitting back and brooding about all the things that are happening. This shit's beyond my control, so I don't bother myself with worrying about it. My life is a happy one. If something is changing, well, maybe it's supposed to."
compassionate
"Thoughtful and compassionate - that's me! I don't ignore things that are in pain. When I'm out in the wilderness taking photographs, I sometimes happen across animals that are hurt. I take them in, nurse them back to health, and let them go again. And that's not just animals. I've helped people, too. I don't like seeing others in pain. It just... It kills me. So I try to do everything in my power to make sure that they aren't, you know, hurting anymore. Maybe it sounds weird, but I put out really good, happy energy, and I think that's how I can help others so well."
indecisive
"Ergh... Okay, okay... I admit. Sometimes, it's hard for me to make decisions. Well, okay, most of the time. I just hate being wrong! And then there are times when the wrong decision could possibly hurt or even kill someone - like a baby bird - that I'm taking care of. Do you have any idea how much that would kill me? I couldn't take that. I'm not... I'm not that good with guilty feelings. It just sucks. So, yeah, I tend to not make decisions very quickly. I tend to sit and think and weigh the pros and cons first. And that's sometimes good, but sometimes, taking the time to do that is just as bad and... ARGH! See, I'm doing it again! I'm not good at this."
naive/impractical
"I... don't really set limitations on myself or anyone else. I tend to believe things that may or may not be true. But, you know, that's okay! It's not a big deal. Right?... Is it a big deal? I don't think it is... I don't believe what any Joe Schmoe on the street tells me, but I guess... If you're convincing... I can believe a lot of things. But that's not really what my family's worried about. They're concerned because I reach for the stars, and nothing less than that will really make me happy. If I say I'm going to climb Mt. Everest, I'm going to fucking climb Mr. Everest... Hey, maybe I should do that next month!"
self-reliant
"I hate depending on others. I just... Bleh! I can do my own stuff! And, really, I like doing things on my own. Being the baby of the family - and the only male most of the time - my sisters and mom were always fawning over me and trying to spoil me. I didn't like that. Is that weird? Haha, I think that's weird! But anyway, I didn't like having things just given to me. I like working for what I get. It's a lot more enjoyable that way! I never ever accept random gifts from others. Birthdays or holidays, maybe - depending on who it is - but just random things? Not really. It feels like... like stealing."
disorganized
"Files? What files? I don't know how I manage without exploding sometimes. My room, my office... Everything is always a clusterfuck of papers and/or clothes. Or leftover food. Empty cans... Yeah, I'm not very good at keeping things clean. Ever. Heh. I don't know, it just always feel like a pain to clean stuff. It just gets messy again, doesn't it?... Okay, okay, so if I kept it clean, it wouldn't be messy in the first place. But how do you just... keep shit clean? It's not that simply, really. Between teaching a class, holding a dog training class, and spending time in the good ol' outdoors... Where do you see time to fit in cleaning?"
Family: Christopher Wand -- Father -- Alaska.
Emma Wand -- Mother -- Alaska.
Sage Wand -- Sister -- California.
Wynter Wand -- Sister -- Alaska.
History:
Josiah was the last of three children born to Emma and Christopher Wand. The family of five lived in Fort Yukon, Alaska, where Emma bred, raised, and trained sled dogs. Christopher worked with the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge, and so he was often away, especially during the winters, when Fort Yukon was basically closed (September to May). The three children grew up learning how to be compassionate, patient, and accepting. They also learned how to discipline themselves. Because the family never had much money, they walked everywhere.
Like his two older sisters, Wynter and Sage, Josiah was homeschooled until he was old enough for first grade; then, his siblings would walk with him to school. Josiah's grades were nothing to brag about. He often had a hard time paying attention to the teachers drone on and on. His mind would wander to what he did that morning, or what he planned to do once school was finally let out. More often than not, his time was spent with his mother and the dogs, learning to train them. If his father was home, Josiah would sit and listen to Christopher's stories about the animals in the refuge. Even from an early age, his interest in animals was clear; even moreso than his two siblings, whose interest was more in their friends.
Through some miracle, Josiah managed to make it into seventh grade with little problems. He found he tended to have to work a little harder, pay more attention, and keep his day dreaming to a minimum if he wanted to keep his parents happy. Anytime he needed help, though, Wynter was there for him. Sage had already graduated school and moved away to go to college in California. Wynter was already in twelfth grade. She made learning easier and fun for Josiah. Seventh grade was also the year that he found his passion for photography. He always loved the beauty of the world, and would find himself on the school's computer looking at pictures of various places whenever he was in the library. He was approached by another student and asked to join their Photography Club. Overjoyed, Josiah hastily agreed. After going to just one meeting, Josiah's interest became a dream. He explained his dreams to his mother, and then to his father when he came home for the summer.
Again, the Wands were not a very wealthy family, but they were all very close. Emma and Christopher had a lot of love for their children, and though they were not spoiled, they were always told to follow their dreams while their parents would try to support them. They knew that supporting Josiah in his dream would be expensive, but he was so passionate about it. Scrounging up enough money, Emma and Chris bought a Nikon D3000 for their son for Christmas. His pictures soon took over the walls. Some people even paid a bit of money for his pictures - though they were mostly just old people looking to further support the brilliant smile on a young teen's face.
He continued to follow his passion, focusing mainly on photography. He rarely applied himself to anything else, though he did enjoy a few classes; Science and History - any - were his favorites, and it showed in his grades. Though he didn't particularly enjoy Mathematics, Josiah was rather good. He graduated school just before his eighteenth birthday with a GPA of 3.0. On the night of his eighteenth birthday, Josiah moved away from Alaska. He moved to Canada to attend college. After recently graduating, he moved to Silverthorn Crossing.
